Santiago, Chile, has become the world’s second largest e-bus operator, outside China. It has 1,800 electric buses, up from just two in 2017, and by next year, will have 4,400 e-buses - 68% of its fleet. The Red Metropolitana de Movilidad runs 391 bus lines that carry 3.3 million passengers per day across Greater Santiago, which has a population of almost seven million. The pivot was the result of some political risk-taking at the national level, plus a totally open approach to technology procurement, involvement of private capital and willingness of the local bus operators to make the shift. Santiago’s e-buses are sourced from Chinese manufacturers, which can deliver vehicles in six to nine months at costs of about US$260,000.
