When people make hopeful, sincere resolutions , we tend to think we can change through willpower alone and ignore environmental and other factors that affect us. Experts suggest a number of things we can do to create change. Recognizing that we are often cued by context, we can structure our home environment to promote good habits, substitute another behavior for the one we want to change, and make new habits easy to do. It takes at least several months of repetition for new behaviors to become habitual and during that time, we can avoid places that trigger old habits. Even if we get discouraged because we take some time off, we can be hopeful because we are picking up from where we left off rather than starting from scratch.
