In 1996, my husband was transferred to the small rural town of Healesville -- far away from our support network of neighbors, friends and family in Melbourne, Australia. In Healesville, it was just me and my husband, our two little kids and two dogs. We hadn’t been there long when we all came down with the flu. I was too sick to drive to the shops and we lived 5km out of town so walking wasn’t an option. There were no takeaway food outlets and this was long before the days of food deliveries. Then there was a phone call from a woman who worked with my husband at his new job, and who had just left a big pot of soup on our doorstep. That soup sustained us for days, until I was well enough to prepare the most basic of meals. Cooking up a big pot of soup has become my go-to thing when someone is sick.
