When Philippa du Toit moved her nonprofit Blind Love Africa to Makhanda in 2020, she had no idea the impact her work would have on the South African community – especially the donkeys the town is famous for. Funding from Animal Aid Abroad, an organization that cares for working animals across the world, helped bring back Donkey Day. Hooves were trimmed, carts repaired, and donkeys were treated to fresh water and plenty of hay. Each donkey owner received a water bucket, rope halter, grooming brush and hoofpicks, and donkey owners got braai meat, hotdogs, and burgers. "We vaccinated quite a few donkeys for rabies, provided treatment for ticks and worms, treated wounds, and advised owners on how to keep their feet safe and healthy," said vet Annie Mears.
