Paris is emerging as a leader in rethinking downtown goods storage and delivery in order to reduce the number of larger, more polluting vehicles. An “inverted building” that houses six floors of logistics in a converted parking lot, with services like dry cleaning and bike repair above it, is one of several sprawling facilities across inner Paris that mix warehouses with other functions, such as retail, offices or light industry. Below the Champs-Élysées, one of the world's most famous shopping streets, Atelier Logistique is creating a facility within 20 minutes’ ride by cargo bike of 4,400 retail stores. Trucks will arrive at night to unload goods that are stored underground until orders come in from the retailers at ground level. Urban logistics start-up Fludis is trying out a floating warehouse, powered by an emissions-free two-ton electric battery, which travels downstream via the River Seine with a cargo of bikes and packages. En route, these cargo bikes are loaded with goods ready to be picked up once the boat has docked.
