Nara, Japan, is home to 1,000 sacred deer, which are designated a national treasure. Last year, nine deer were found dead, having ingested plastic bags filled with snacks tourists left behind for them. Hidetoshi Matsukawa, who works for a wholesale souvenir agent, wanted to do something to protect the deer. Working with a local paper manufacturer and a design firm, he and the team developed "shikagami," or deer paper, which is made with rice bran and milk cartons. "The news about the death of deer by plastic bags creates a negative image, as though the park is a cemetery for deer," he told CNN News.
