Arizona police officer Brian Zach encountered several child abuse cases while on duty. In 2018, in one of those cases, he met then-two-year-old Kaila. They spent several hours bonding, Zach said. "We colored. We watched Wreck-it-Ralph. She loved Wreck It Ralph." His wife Cierra recalls what he was like when he came home after that shift: "He shows up, he's like, 'I got to hang out with the cutest little girl! She was so awesome.'" Kaila was taken to the hospital and treated for multiple injuries. When child protective services couldn't find any family members willing to care for the child, Zach and his family immediately took her in. "When we got her she knew three words, basically," Zach recalls. "Now she loves to talk." After two years as foster parents, the couple officially adopted Kaila at the age of four on Aug. 18, 2020. They plan to renew their foster license to help more kids.
