In the last week of November 2020, Diamond mining giant De Beers outlined plans to become carbon neutral by 2030, as well as add safeguards for more ethical sourcing of its diamonds. The company plans to provide the origin and impact of every diamond it discovers and sells. In an industry widely critiqued for issues from depleting natural resources to smuggling to child labor in supply lines, the company also plans to extend "a set of ethical, social and environmental standards beyond its value chain," Reuters reports. The advocacy group Human Rights Watch has recently warned that major jewelry brands are still not doing enough to address human rights and environmental harms in their supply chains.
