Women make up 7% of Yemen’s workforce, and the country has one of the biggest gender gaps in the world. A United Nations Development Program project in Yemen is providing much needed opportunity for women. “Before this project, our situation was desperate. We felt frustration, fear, shyness and hesitation,” said Iman Ghaleb Hadi Al-Hamali, station manager for the Friends of the Environment Solar Project. Al-Hamali is a member of the all-female team that built and runs the solar microgrid. The electricity it generates is a boon to a country where 50% of Yemenis living In rural areas do not have access to electricity and rely on diesel generators. There are plans to build 100 microgrids across Yemen and expand the reach of affordable renewable energy.
