A group of older women in Victoria, British Columbia, have formed a support group to help their unhoused neighbors living in tents in city parks find stable housing. Elaine Weidner, 75, hopes the program will provide a model for volunteers in other Canadian communities. Having stable housing makes it easier to find work, said one of the first two people she helped to get a hostel bed. A former park resident who now works in community support says the program is "solidarity, not charity."
