A 40-year-old school bus is now a mobile grocery store serving low-income residents of Johannesburg. The Skhaftin bus -- named after a local slang word meaning 'lunchbox' -- brings fresh vegetables, beans, spices and cereals to different neighborhoods three days a week. People are encouraged to bring their own containers to reduce waste. The focus on both food and sustainability grew from brainstorming sparked by activist Ilka Stein, as people lost jobs during pandemic lockdowns in South Africa. Hunger and poor waste collection were flagged as problems for poor neighborhoods even as stores in wealthier suburbs promoted zero-waste shopping.
