After Jon Sewell retired from building purchasing cooperatives for hospitals, he started selling calzones in Iowa City -- but never lost the coop spirit. So after Grubhub, a national delivery platform, bought the local OrderUp platform that Iowa City restaurant owners used for online delivery orders and doubled the 15 percent commission, he helped them create their own co-op service, Chomp. Now the pandemic has brought an enthusiastic response from restaurant owners for LoCo -- locally owned delivery coops. People see that big venture-backed platforms aren’t good for anyone other than themselves, he says.
