Wildlife is abundant in eastern Mindanao's tropical forests because, in that territory, known as Pangasananan, Manobo conservation practices have kept the land ecologically intact. The ICCA Consortium estimates such traditionally protected but little documented, areas cover 21 percent of all of Earth's land -- more than the 14 percent protected by countries. Activists say Indigenous contributions must be recognized and supported as countries look to conserve 30 percent of their land by 2030, rather than further displacing Indigenous communities in order to create new protected areas. If areas conserved by Indigenous and local communities are included, more than 30 percent of the world's land is already conserved, says the ICCA report.
