Lego has come up with a new prototype of its iconic toy bricks, made with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycled from bottles that have been thrown away. According to the company, the quest for a more sustainable product has been a long and arduous one, with its scientists and engineers testing more than 250 variations of PET materials, as well as hundreds of other plastic formulations, before coming up with the latest prototype. "The biggest challenge on our sustainability journey is rethinking and innovating new materials that are as durable, strong and high-quality as our existing bricks," said Tim Brooks, Lego's vice-president of environmental responsibility. The new product will take "some time" to hit store shelves.
