Long-term conservation efforts, including the re-creation of bamboo habitats, are seeing restorative effects for the giant panda population. Their classification was changed from "endangered" to "vulnerable" in 2016 by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, but the Chinese environmental ministry withheld making an announcement until recently out of concern the announcement could relax conservation efforts. As bamboo makes up 99 percent of the panda's diet, healthy bamboo forests are crucial. Currently there are 1,800 giant pandas in the wild. "This is the result of years of hard work. Well done to all the conservationists," a person wrote on the Chinese microblogging platform Sina Weibo.
