More than 400,000 Oregon children will receive three monthly payments to make up for school meals they missed while schools or child care centers were closed. The payments, which vary depending on whether learning was totally or partially remote, can be spent on foods and beverages people buy with food stamps. For children enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, money will be loaded onto their parents' Oregon Trail cards, while other children will get special debit cards, mailed from South Dakota. Cards will be reloaded in August and September. The extra money will not affect eligibility for food stamps, day care support or other Department of Human Services programs for low-income people, the department says.
