It all began with a thought generated during a morning run in Forest Lake, Fla., in 2017. So many people were out helping each other after a storm that they raised the following question for Mike Kaiser: Why couldn’t this happen more often? So a call for volunteers interested in helping their neighbors went out on a community website, and the community responded -- big time. Four years later, the group -- called the Forest Lake Area Good Samaritans -- is still going strong. One of the group’s slogans is, “It feels good to do good.” They do just that through cleanup days, May Day baskets they randomly leave on people’s doorsteps, a 31-day random act of kindness challenge and donating plants to senior centers, among other activities. The group now supports other communities as well.
