While decarbonization processes will deprive 9.5 million people of their fossil fuel jobs, the good news is that the renewable energy sector will provide 17.4 million jobs worldwide. Scientists at the European Institute on Economics and the Environment in Italy assembled a dataset on five sets of jobs in 11 energy subsectors, covering 50 countries worldwide. Calculating the 'job footprint,' the number of jobs per unit of electricity or fuel produced, each country estimated the number of energy jobs in different regions under various future scenarios. One-third of future jobs could be tied to manufacturing and installation of solar and wind infrastructure, which would be welcomed by countries strong in these sectors.
