When University of Alberta engineering professor Rafiq Ahmad saw the toll that Covid-19 was taking on frontline workers in Spain and Italy, he set out to develop a solution -- mobile respirators that would keep frontline workers safe from Covid-19. His team's personal protective respirator combines a snorkel mask with hoses to a special battery-powered fan and filter system, and he hopes it will be possible to mass-produce the device this fall. The project benefitted from a blossoming partnership focused on addressing North American issues between University of Alberta and Mexico’s Tecnológico de Monterrey, whose 31 campuses in 25 cities serve 92,000 students.
