After the lockdown interrupted her music studies, 24-year-old Malawian student Maggie Mkandawire soon found things to do. She and her friends bought four meters of a local cotton fabric and made 36 face masks for vulnerable people. Then they visited villages, teaching tailors and chiefs to make the masks, reaching thousands of people. To combat misinformation, they ran weekly programs on COVID-19 on the most popular radio stations, which health officials say have been very effective. Mkandawire is a singer-songwriter who leads a dance group, posts workout videos and teaches people how to cook with non-traditional foods.
