Research experiments that used to take Dr. Cadle-Davidson's entire lab team six months of hard work to complete now takes AI-powered robotic cameras (named "BlackBird") just one day. And not only that: BlackBird actually does a better job of explaining the genetics of grapes, meaning that the development of grape varieties that are more resistant to powdery mildew can be sped up. Plant diseases like powdery mildew can show up in infrared before they are visible to the naked eye, and technology like BlackBird has the potential to help researchers develop tools to help farmers detect disease early and therefore reduce fungicide usage and lost crops.
