Hundreds of affordable homes, a large park, and retail and non-profit space will fill a vacant 19-acre lot in Austin, Texas. The plan, developed after three years' consultation with residents of the city’s historic but gentrifying St. John area, means its working-class families will be able to stay in their neighborhood and former residents with historic ties may be able to return. Private developer Greystar will partner with the city’s housing authority to build at least 560 housing units, expand the park, add retail space that meets community needs, and pay off the $10.8 million debt the city incurred to buy the lot in 2008. The city's Right to Stay and Right to Return policies apply to the development. The city originally had planned to build a.police station and court building on the lot.
