Waste management in Nigeria is minimal, with trash often being burned due to lack of safer disposal methods. As for old tires they are often dumped or abandoned. But one company has found a way to make them useful, dubbing the name, "black gold." Freetown Waste Management Recycle, a 128-employee company led by Ifedolapo Runsewe, collects and recycles old tires around Nigeria. "Most people don't know that for your tires, the entire component of the a tire is valuable in terms of the metal in the tire, the fiber in the tire," says Runsewe. Freetown relies on local scavengers who collect the tires from dumping grounds. The facility so far has recycled more than 100,000 tires and turns them into speed bumps and zig-zag interlocking pavers for playgrounds, driveways, and walkways.
