The world's first all-electric, self-propelled cargo ship has debuted in Norway and after certification, will start commercial operations in 2022. The Yara Birkeland, which will replace 40,000 diesel-powered truck journeys every year and thus cut 1000 tons of CO2, is a joint venture between chemical production firm Yara and maritime technology company Kongsberg. The ship will ferry chemicals and fertilizer from Yara's production plant in Prosgrunn to nearby towns. "This is an excellent example of green transition in practice," says Svein Tore Holsether, CEO of Yara. "There are a lot of places in the world with congested roads that will benefit from a high-tech solution like this."
