As New Orleans continues to be impacted by urban flooding from heavy rainfall, the community stepped up to tackle the issue. Water Wise Gulf, a nonprofit environmental outreach collaborative, helped the community to build a new storm water drainage system in New Orleans' 7th Ward, one of the areas most impacted by flooding. The green infrastructure features a large bioswale with native plants that can absorb flood waters. It is one of three large-scale constructions projects in the city. All projects are entirely designed and constructed by locals themselves. “When the first rain came, to see the water get sucked up and no more water pooling at the stairs — it was just an awesome experience,” says Lomax-Brown, president of Hollygrove Dixon Neighborhood Association.
