It all started five years ago, when Lizzy Moore and her family decided to open their house to Santa Monica College students who had nowhere to go for Thanksgiving. Some thought they were crazy to invite strangers into their house, but in the first year, Moore and her family celebrated Thanksgiving in a decorative banquet with 50 students in their backyard. In the following years, even more students arrived. When the pandemic hit, the yearly celebration could no longer be held. But Lizzie and her family wanted to continue with the spirit of giving thanks, so she enlisted the help of Santa Monica College faculty, staff, and students to run a food drive. It was a huge success: more than 1,400 families in the community came. "It started with me and my family saying we want to do this," shared Moore. "And my friends and my extended family and my community saying we stand with you and we will help you."
