The Manguinhos neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro used to be a "cracolândia," a slum where residents often would smoke cocaine and dispose of trash. Much has changed since then, however. The place is now completely transformed into a large urban garden called the "Hortas Cariocas." Created in 2006, the garden spans nearly four soccer fields, supplying organic vegetables to nearly 800 families steeped in food poverty. “I know I am planting to harvest tomorrow," says Diane Silva, a worker on the urban farm. "It gives a lot of pleasure to work in a garden, it is a job that we enjoy, I love this.” The garden project has expanded to 49 vegetable gardens spanning all across the Rio.
