The first wild bison to roam in the UK for thousands of years will arrive in north Kent in Spring 2022, with the goal of rewilding a dense, formerly commercial pine forest. The £1m Kent project, Wilder Blean, is run by the Kent Wildlife Trust and the Wildwood Trust, and funded by the People’s Postcode Lottery. The rangers trained with wild bison herds in the Netherlands, where bison were reintroduced in 2007. The Kent herd will be made up of a young bull from Germany, an older female from Scotland, and two young females from Ireland, and will roam and feed freely across 210 hectares (519 acres). The UK is one of the world's most nature-depleted countries and the rangers hope the bison project will be a beacon for a wider recovery.
