The experience of trying to keep his family warm years ago, when he couldn't afford to pay his gas bills, inspired US Army veteran, Mike Esmond, to spend $12,000 to pay off the utility bills for residents of his Florida Panhandle city during the last two Christmas seasons. In March, Planters peanut company, issued him a check of $104,000 for his good work. Since then, 677 residents with past-due bills have benefited from his philanthropy. I've had some older, retired people call me crying on the phone, because I paid their bills, because they live on Social Security, and they don't know what's going on, says Esmond.
