Rainfall which has set a hundred-year record in Malaysia has brought in floods and displaced thousands. And in the absence of adequate government support, many more thousands are rising to the occasion to provide help to their fellow citizens. Cleaning and repair works, laundry services, delivery of food and rescue work are all being offered for free by people who don't have the money but believe that the community needs to collectively look after itself. "I don't have much money but I have some energy to spare, so this is me contributing to the society because 'kita jaga kita' (we look after ourselves)," says Ika Fikri, 29, the mother of one who lives in Shah Alam, Selangor and provides her laundry services for free.
