Computer scientist Erico Pinheiro has invented a drone system that is delivering medical supplies to the remote communities of his island nation, Cape Verde. The technology is already saving lives and reaching the smallest and farthest islands places it would take days for medical professionals to access. He built the first drone in 2015 to help his grandfather sow seeds; with the COVID-19 pandemic, he decided to repurpose the drone system to carry medical supplies. Currently, the largest drone can carry 5 kilograms and travels 10 kilometers. Pinheiro's dream is to have a drone on each island and have them travel between the islands.
