Since 24-year-old Arizona State University fitness student Tierra Hopkins began seeing homeless people in city parks as she worked out, she has been combining her passion for fitness with a desire to help those in need. She started leading free workout sessions at parks; participants bring an item to donate. Each 30-minute workout includes two or three circuits of full-body exercises and a cool down. Then, the group puts the donated items in bags and hands them out to homeless people in the park. Since she began in 2020, Hopkins has held her Saturday morning workouts at various parks in Phoenix and Tempe, which has experienced a 96% increase in unsheltered people from 2017 to 2020.
