Hopkins County Animal shelter in Dawson Springs, Kentucky admitted 90 dogs and 120 cats after the state was hit with several tornadoes. Even two weeks after the disasters, pets are still being found. Most of them are cats. The shelter keeps the animals for 35 days before they put them up for adoption. Owners whose homes were damaged may choose to have the shelter care for the animals as long as they sign a 15-day contract. They can renew as many times as needed until they can get back on their feet. “As long as the owner stays in contact with us and renews that 15-day contract, then we will hold those animals as long as we need to,” says Dustin Potenza, executive director of the shelter.
