Almost all of the 8.7 million Ugandan children under five years have been vaccinated against Type 2 Polio during a three-day mass vaccination campaign last week. Dr. Alfred Driwale, program manager of Uganda National Expanded Program on Immunization (UNEPI), said 8,265,000 children had been immunized. Only 18 districts have not reached the desired target of 70% but were given time to complete the exercise. Whereas Uganda and entire Africa were certified by the World Health Organisation as free from wild poliovirus in August 2020, samples collected from sewerage last August confirmed a circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 that affects children in communities with low immunity levels, and prompted the nationwide campaign.
