The Ko-Kwel Wellness Center in Oregon, once a dream of the Coquille Indian Tribe, is now a reality thanks to the community development financial institution (CDFI) Craft3. The facility is Oregon's first tribal center that offers services to the general public in addition to tribal members. The regional lender allocated a New Markets Tax Credit to secure the equity needed to build the center. These credits target funders for projects in communities that have been historically underserved. The unique mission-based financing put together for the holistic health facility provided several grants, and two loans making culturally sensitive medical care accessible to a diverse segment of the population in rural areas.
