Hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicle sales in the US have increased as sales of non-hybrid internal combustion engine vehicles fueled by gasoline or diesel decreased. In the fourth quarter of 2021, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles together accounted for 11% of US sales of light-duty vehicle sales - cars, vans, SUVs, and light pickup trucks - showing that manufacturers are heeding consumer preferences for larger vehicles. These were mostly crossover vehicles, which combine attributes of passenger cars and sport utility vehicles, or vehicles such as vans and pickups, which previously didn't have many hybrid or electric vehicle options. The number of hybrid and electric vehicle models made in 2021 increased by 126 vs an increase of only 49 for non-hybrid internal combustion vehicle models.
