Russia's invasion of Ukraine has brought painful memories to Manitoba's Syrian community as they remember the 11th anniversary of Syrian civil war. But, they are ready to welcome Ukrainians as they were welcomed. Joseph Chaeban, who came to Canada from Lebanon in 1988, owned Chaeban Ice Cream with his wife, Zainab Ali, and partner Darryl Stewart. Hesays theWinnipeggers did nothesitate when he asked for help in bringing his wife's family, who are Syrian refugees, to Winnipeg. "It's like seeing angels." Whatever his family can do, they'll try, he said. Maysoun Darweesh of Kurdish Initiative, a non-profit that supports refugees, says the attack on Ukraine brought back painful memories. "As Russia has stained hand with Syrian blood, they're doing the same in Ukraine." She is ready to support newcomer refugees. "We love them. We will do our best to help them. We are waiting for you."
