Palm oil is an ubiquitous substance found in many products, to pizza dough, to cooking oil, and shampoo. Although cheap and efficient to produce, palm oil causes unwanted repercussions on natural systems. Aside from the deforestation needed to clear land for palm tree farms, researchers believe it also poses health risks due to its high saturated fat content. At Nanyang Technological University and University of Malay, researchers are proposing an alternative solution: microalgae oil. The oil can be sustainably produced from a concoction of microalgae, growth medium, natural sunlight, and pyruvic acid. The microalgaeoil possesses many qualities found in palm oilwithoutcausing harmful effects on the environment.
