In 2021, San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced an initiative to prioritize workforce development for women in city projects. The Mission Rock waterfront development project, which will transform a parking lot into a new neighborhood near the San Francisco Giants stadium, provides a unique opportunity to bring women into the construction trade. But it would take effort; in San Francisco and across the US, women make up only about 10% of the construction workforce. Mission Rock Academy was created as an apprenticeship program to help build a pipeline of female construction workers. They had to overcome issues as diverse as misperceptions about the nature of construction to lack of childcare options and the need for expensive tools. The partners persevered to overcome the challenges, and its first cohort of 16 students have now graduated and is working on Mission Rock and other projects.
