Italy's first offshore wind farm is officially online, now that all 10 offshore wind turbines have been installed. The Taranto wind farm, located off the Puglia coast—the heel of Italy's 'boot'—is the first in the Mediterranean Sea. With a capacity of 30 megawatts, it has an estimated output of 58,000 MWh per year and will be able to power 21,000 homes. Taranto features bottom-fixed turbines, but going forward, developers are looking into floating offshore wind farms in the Mediterranean because of its depth. Italy’s national wind energy association Anev has set a target of 5 GW of floating offshore wind for the country by 2040.
