With terrified residents pouring out of Kyiv as Russian tanks made their way there earlier in the year, 77-year-old Asya Serpinska walked toward her animal shelter of two decades. With three colleagues, she kept most of the 700 dogs and 100 cats alive -- and even rescued a lion -- amongst shelling and Russian forces threatening their lives. She says she's stubborn. Her husband Valentyn, at 78-years-old, drove through the night and hostile checkpoints to bring her a generator that saved the shelter.
