Eight-year-old English mathematician Michelle has been crowned the "top mathlete" in the UK Year 3 category of this year's World Maths Day Global Challenge. The challenge is an online worldwide competition involving 10 million young children from 160 countries. Michelle, who attends primary school in Deptford, East London, is the only girl to have won gold in the 10 categories this year. Her school is part of Mathletics, which helps students build their math knowledge and skills. Principal Dean Gordon says the challenges and tasks are quite difficult, with difficulty based on the child's age. "We try to make math exciting, engaging, make it fun," he says. A lot of the activities are done on computers, i-pads, laptops, and mobile phones. Michelle says she wants to be a scientist, and mathematics can help her achieve that goal.
