When David Chen tweeted that his "autism spectrum disorder kid is the different kid in the class," it brought an outpouring of experiences from other parents of children on the autism spectrum who also experienced isolation or shunning. Chen invited all nineteen of his son's kindergarten classmates to his birthday party, but only one came. Sixteen did not reply. He brought the slab cake and goody bags to the indoor play center he booked, just in case they might turn up. The goody bags now will be given out at a small in-class celebration organized by his son’s homeroom teacher. Two weeks earlier, 16 of the 19 students attended a birthday party for another student that his son said was "awesome." Chen, a financial planner, works with families of disabled children and knows the stresses and heartbreaks they face. He realizes other parents may not know about the struggles of parents with special-needs children.
