Using data from over 11,000 children from ages 9 to 13, recent research has found that children who play team sports have better mental health than those who don't play any sports. This includes a lower rate of anxiety, depression, withdrawal, and more. However, the research also shows that kids who play individual sports -- like gymnastics -- tend to have worse mental health than those who don't play sports at all. This data suggests that the social aspect of team sports significantly bolsters a child's mental wellness in a way that individual sports do not.
