On July 17, 2022, the 6-year-old Chihuahua, "Goofuss" ran from the car after being startled in an accident on the highway in rural Chester County, South Carolina. "He had darted into the woods and we just couldn’t find him. It was dark," recalled T. Melton, chief at Richburg Fire & Rescue. Powers, who is 87-years-old, had adopted Goofuss years ago, and the two were inseparable. She and her family stayed in the area for days, searching with firefighters and good Samaritans with no luck. Finally, they returned to Florida, but the community continued the search -- posting on social media, and local animal control even put up a humane trap near the crash site. Then, on August 2nd, more than two weeks after Goofuss ran into the woods, a woman reported a dog who had wandered to her house, and whom she recognized as missing from social media posts. Sure enough, it was Goofuss. John Ladd, a stranger who'd been assisting with the search drove him all the way to Florida the next day. "So many people pulled together to help out," Ladd described. "It's just wonderful."
