Southern right whales are returning to breeding grounds across Australia. Their numbers are currently at 2,500 from a former 25,000 in the 1800s. A study that has surveyed the species for thirty years since 1991 found they have rebounded from near extinction at rate of about six to seven percent per year. "It's encouraging to see them recover but it's going to be some time before they're fully back in their original habitats," says Dr. Steve Burnell, who began the research project in 1991.
