Nicola Sturgeon, the first minister of Scotland, declared emergency laws to freeze rent, helping tenants to make it through living costs. The hope was for the government to give people a feeling of security of having a roof over their heads. "The Scottish government does not have the power to stop your energy bills soaring," said Sturgeon. "But we can and will take action to make sure that your rent does not rise." Other forms of humanitarian aid are underway -- energy bills will be fixed at £2,500, which will paid for by borrowing; rail fares will be frozen until early 2023; and free school meals will be provided for those in the sixth and seventh grades.
