Actor Anthony Mackie -- Captain America in the Marvel universe -- is helping repair hurricane-damaged roofs in his old neighborhood. He is working with roofing manufacturer GAF, which has committed to installing 500 roofs throughout the Gulf Region, including 150 in the 7th ward of New Orleans which was hit in 2005 and 2021. The actor grew up in New Orleans working at his family’s roofing business, Mackie One Construction. “It gives me a sense of pride that I’m doing my people a service,” he said. “It’s important to me to bring back the gifts and blessings I received outside the city.” The roofing is part of GAF’s Community Matters program which is also training people in roofing skills. Rebuilding Together New Orleans is supplying the labor while GAF supplies the materials and pays the costs. Mackie has been in numerous Avengers movies as Sam Wilson -- aka Falcon -- and is taking over the Captain America role.
