For nearly 30 years, Zhu Shaozhuang has been running a store in Shanghai, China, selling discounted undergarments for elderly people. Aptly called “Uncle Underwear”, this brick-and-mortar store serves primarily elderly customers, who have been left behind by e-commerce and by businesses cutting back on making undergarments and wardrobe for the elderly. As China’s population ages rapidly, thinking about ways to meet the needs of the elderly is more important than ever. According to Mr. Zhu, his goal for running the business is to create a community rather than to make a profit. In fact, some of his customers show up regularly not to buy merchandise, but to talk and listen to the oldies music he plays in the store. At 72 years of age, the store owner wants to continue what he is doing as long as possible. He said, “The other day, I saw a story online about a 97-year-old Japanese lady, who continues to serve the elderly after she retired as a nurse. I’m inspired by her.” Mr. Zhu’s story is a beautiful example of how one act of inspiration opens the door to more acts of inspiration.
