A ‘flying’ ferry that runs on electricity will be launched in Stockholm in November, before operating commercially as part of the city's public transport fleet starting in 2023. A fleet of more than 60 diesel ferries currently serves as public transport for the 2.4m people living on the 14 islands that make up the Swedish capital. The ferry will initially be used between the outlying suburb of Ekerö and Stockholm city centre, cutting a 55-minute commute to 25 minutes. The new ferries will reportedly use 80% less energy, be virtually silent, and slash fuel bills by 90%. “Flying with Candela P-12 will feel like travelling on a modern express train, even in adverse weather conditions,” says the Swedish startup company. While they have just 30 seats, much less than the current ferries, the company says that they could provide a shuttle service departing every 11 minutes instead of the current two depatures a day.
